 August 11

by themillionairedrive

Trade negotiations between Canada and the United States are officially entering the “everyone suddenly discovered the deadline” stage.

After weeks of meetings, phone calls, negotiations, negotiations about negotiations, and probably enough coffee to fill Lake Ontario, Canadian and American officials are reportedly trying to put together a trade proposal for President Donald Trump before August 19.

Because 50% tariffs have a funny way of getting everyone’s attention.

The Clock Is Ticking

Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc is meeting with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer for the third time in just three weeks.

That’s either a very productive relationship…

…or both men now know each other’s coffee orders by heart.

Meanwhile, Canada’s chief trade negotiator, Janice Charette, has been spending long days in Washington trying to move discussions forward.

Neither side is saying much publicly.

Which usually means one of two things:

The talks are going really well…

…or nobody wants to accidentally say something that makes everything explode.

What’s on the Line?

If no agreement is reached, the U.S. plans to impose 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian exports beginning August 19.

Everything from alcohol to hockey sticks could be affected.

Nothing says “Canadian economy” quite like tariffs on hockey equipment.

Somewhere, a hockey stick probably has no idea it’s become part of international diplomacy.

Canada is also trying to remove tariffs on steel, aluminum, lumber, and automobiles.

Needless to say, there’s a lot riding on these conversations.

Everyone Wants a Better Deal

Canada hopes to extend CUSMA.

The United States wants changes.

Canada wants relief.

Businesses want certainty.

Consumers want lower prices.

Politicians want headlines.

Markets just want everyone to stop surprising them every Tuesday morning.

Politics Never Takes a Vacation

Back home, political pressure continues to grow.

Prime Minister Mark Carney is facing criticism from Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, who says Canada needs a stronger deal with zero tariffs on key industries.

Michelle Rempel Garner also argued Canadians are expecting results.

Welcome to politics.

If a deal gets signed, someone will claim credit.

If it doesn’t, someone else will definitely claim responsibility belongs to somebody else.

Some traditions never change.

Why Investors Are Watching

Trade negotiations don’t just affect politicians.

Markets watch them closely.

Businesses watch them closely.

Currencies watch them closely.

Well… currencies don’t actually watch anything.

But traders certainly do.

One announcement can move billions of dollars in global markets within minutes.

That’s why next week could become very important for investors on both sides of the border.

Final Thoughts

Trade agreements matter.

Strong economies matter.

Jobs matter.

Families depending on those jobs certainly matter.

We should pray for our leaders to make wise decisions that benefit the people they serve.

But it’s also worth remembering something.

Every generation has faced economic uncertainty.

Every generation has worried about markets, governments, inflation, trade disputes, or financial hardship.

Yet through every generation, one thing has remained constant.

Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 13:8 says:

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”

Governments negotiate.

Tariffs come and go.

Markets rise and fall.

But our hope was never meant to rest in politicians, trade agreements, or stock indexes.

Our hope rests in Jesus Christ.

The greatest problem humanity has is not tariffs.

It is sin.

Every one of us has fallen short of God’s perfect standard.

The amazing news is that God loved us so much He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins and rise again.

Through faith in Him, we can be forgiven, reconciled to God, and receive eternal life.

No trade agreement can promise that.

No economy can manufacture that.

No government can legislate that.

Only Jesus Christ can save.

If you’ve never trusted Him as your Lord and Savior, don’t wait.

The world’s economy may always be uncertain.

But your eternity doesn’t have to be.

Turn to Jesus Christ today.
